Many of us are familiar with the haiku poetic form—at least we think we are. In this two-hour workshop led by Joan Canby, a Haiku Society of America member and published haiku poet, we will divide our time between reading and writing haiku. By the end of the session, participants will have the opportunity to share their poems.

Why learn about and practice haiku?

Practicing haiku can create a mindful and calming atmosphere in our lives. By focusing on the external world rather than our inner distractions, we cultivate a deeper appreciation for nature. Haiku helps us capture and remember moments—ranging from humorous to tragic—allowing us to record our interpretations of life. Ultimately, writing haiku encourages us to step outside our inner thoughts and leads to a more observant, reflective, and environmentally aware existence.

• The Writer’s Garrett: Each year, over 2500 readers, writers, literary enthusiasts, and young people take part in programming at The Writer's Garret. Whether riding the rails during Rail Writers, submitting a poem to the Common Language Project, attending a Dallas Is Lit! event, or participating in one of their workshops or discussions, there is something for everyone at The Garret.
• Aaron Glover: Executive Director of The Writer’s Garrett. Aaron’s first chapbook, Bio Logic, was released in February 2017 via INF Press. His poetry has appeared in Sixfold, Thimble Literary Magazine, Mad Swirl, the Virginia Quarterly Review, Illya’s Honey, and elsewhere. He staged and crafted the script for Words for A Resonant Space, a 2024 collaboration between The Writer's Garret and Pegasus Contemporary Ballet featuring the poetry of Lisa Huffaker. From 2011 to 2016, he was on faculty in the Department of Performance Studies at Texas A&M University, where he taught acting, musical theatre, and theatre history. He worked throughout Texas and the Great Plains as a performer and director. He holds an MFA from the University of Houston.
