- Tea and cast iron teapots originated in China. But when the Japanese found the price of the Chinese cast iron teapots too expensive, they began manufacturing their own. Known as tetsubin, these teapots originated in Japan between the 17th and 18th centuries where they became an important part of the Japanese tea ceremony. Today they're popular worldwide. Traditionally these teapots were heated using a charcoal fire, but can also be heated on a stovetop.
