- In Buddhist mythology, the goddess Ti Kuan Yin appeared to a peasant who faithfully tended to a forgotten temple. She told him that when he left the temple the next day, he would find something that would change his life.
- After completing his duties the next day, the peasant exited the temple and saw a tea bush that was not there before. Carefully, he removed the plant and planted it on a hillside near his home.
- Legend suggests this was the "mother" of all Ti Kuan Yin plants.
